I don't do so well in classes that require memorization as opposed to understanding. Math classes, science classes, philosophy classes, et cetera I have no problem with. I test well because I understand the material, and it's all about application of things learned.
Classes like History, and my Physical Geography class, I have serious issues with. It's no longer about understanding, but about obtained information that can only be applied in one way. I don't know everything about Andrew Jackson. I don't want to know everything about Andrew Jackson. I want to learn things I can apply in other situations. Like a formula, or composition. I don't care that the soil is podzol or that the panic of 18whateverthefuck was due to heavy land speculation. It might be interesting that the clouds are altocumulus, or those nice little wispy cirrus, but that's the only application I have.
This is frustrating. |

I've taken classes in a variety of subjects in college and done well at all of them. Even in the memorization classes. I never took notes and never studied. Hardly ever cracked a book and wrote all my essays the day they were due. Had a 3.85 GPA for my BA and a 3.95 GPA for my MA. My classmates all hated me because they thought I was cheating somehow. But here is the most important thing I learned about being able to give an instructor back the information they want. If you don't spend time with your head down taking notes, you will see that instructors all have a way of emphasizing the things they think are important. Their voice changes or they wave their hand differently or turn their body a certain way. If you can pick out their "tells", you will pick up 90% of the info you need. And if you can give them back that 90% on a test, you don't have anything else to worry about.

I've definitely noticed those changes in tone and pitch and whatnot, and that has been helpful, but when it comes to the test I can't really regurgitate the information because despite that the information is there when test time comes around I have difficulty accessing it.
And if you read the commend below yours, you'll see why :)
Congratulations - you're a mapper!
That's absolutely correct. I'd say it's better than being a packer :)
By the way, did you change your phone number? I think I remember trying to get a hold of you a while back but not being able to for one reason or another. I didn't want to stop by uninvited since I hadn't seen you in so long. :P
I miss hanging out with you two! I don't get nearly enough Thai food because of it.
Heh. Yeah, we ditched our landline and are using our cells exclusively now. Mine's 740-3043. Let's have some Thai sometime soon. :) | |
